Ribosomal sequences of unpublished species

Herman Phaff isolated, purified, and thoroughly characterized thousands of strains over the years.  Many did not match known species at the time, and were designated simply by genus, such as “Candida sp.” or “Pichia sp.” Until his death at the age of 88, he continued to spend time in his laboratory, characterizing these strains gathered over the years, and publishing one or two new species descriptions per year.

Ribosomal sequencing of the D1/D2 region of the large (26S) ribosomal subunit of hundreds of these strains has revealed upwards of 100 unpublished species in the Phaff collection.  Two obstacles currently delay the publication of these species: additional isolates, and further characterization.  We would like to offer to share ribosomal sequences of these potentially novel species to researchers who have additional isolates and wish to collaborate on publication of these new species.

All sequences have been compared to those in public databases using the NCBI Nucleotide-Nucleotide blast search [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov].  The sequences selected for listing on this web site differ by six or more nucleotides (1% divergence) from other sequence accessions.  Many additional sequences have been obtained that differ by one to five nucleotides, but are not considered novel species at this time.  Contact the collection curator for information on these similar strains.

The potentially new species have been divided into two groups, ascomycetes and basidiomycetes.  By clicking on the links below, you will download a table of strains of potentially new species, sorted by the most similar published species.  For example, strain UCD 74-1030 is listed alphabetically under “P” because it differs from Pichia pastoris by six substitutions.
